As a convert, one of the things I appreciate most about the Catholic Church is the liturgical year. No faith parties like the Catholic church! Of course the feasting is always preceded by fasting. Today is New Year's Day, that is the first day of that liturgical year. The Roman Catholic liturgical year begins with Advent. We prepare for the coming of our Lord. Yes, advent before Christmas. A purple season for prayer, penance and preparation. . As Father Scalia told us today, the more you prepare for His coming, the more you can rejoice when he comes. So, how are you preparing?
In our home we put up our bare Christmas tree, upon which we will hang our Advent calendar items. They tell the story of Christmas one day at a time. We plan to decorate our tree on Christmas Eve before going to the Midnight Mass. We have lit the first candle of our advent wreath. And we have begun the Real Learning Tomie de Paula Advent and Christmas study. I, as a homemaker, have decided to prepare my home as well. I plan to clean one spot of my home thoroughly everyday. So by the time Christ arrives, my home will be ready for company. Some of my new year's resolutions are to read the Scriptures daily and to pray more regularly.
